The Kelgurl Chronicles

What started out as a family trip to the San Felipe 250 off road race turned into a event worthy of the best of times. We have been involved with the MAG 7 race team for some time now and this year we were not going to be working the race but rather took the opportunity to be true spectators and hence we invited the world to go with us and partake of the spectacle that is the SCORE San Felipe 250. Joining us for this adventure of a lifetime... Heh Heh... were the usual suspects, Ray, UB, Lucky, Kelgurl, Andrew(I'm going to Prague) and the rookies Charlie (the racing Brit) and Mark (the Irish Guy).

Now I love introducing folks to the world of off road but OMG this was too good to be true. These new guys were true aficionados of the racing sport and I'm talking about all type of racing and all sports for that matter. Ahhh a mans, man Whats more, These guys fit right in with this mad cap bunch of MAG 7 racers so long as the beer was cold and the talk was about speed and race cars. good stuff.

Well the action was quick and the winners were many we went into town to see the contingency row and the technical inspections (Scrutineering to the Brits and Irish Boys)
There were a lot of people just having a good time buying up the usual assortment of t shirts, Elotes (Corn) and Fish Tacos from the several hundred vendors that lined the Malecon (Ocean Blvd) leading to the inspection area.

Oh wait yeah that was us doing all the buying and eating... well the bands played on and we got our fill of good food and Tecates then we headed back to Petes Camp to settle in for the night. We decided that we needed to get up early to try and make it to Pit #1. As Dawn broke we got up and headed out. We had driven to race mile 23 when a swarm of cars dashed off the road into the desert and thinking that they must know something that we didn't, we followed them. What we discovered was a great place to watch the race and we got there just in time to see Motorcycle 1X race by!!!

After a parade of bikes and quads came by there was a 3 hour lull in the action and then that all too familiar sound of the helicopter signaling the pending arrival of the Trophy Trucks

the race went on for the rest of the day and on into the night when we got tired we retreated to the campground and got a much needed shower and a cold beverage well OK a brewski.

Later Saturday night we all got together for food and margaritas courtesy of San Diego's Margarita Man Bill Thompson. Well before you know it the trip was over Lucky came down with the flu, Kel survived another trip and Andrew got one heck of a going away trip.

You know, we may just have to do this again.....Hmmmmm Baja 500 ... June 2008
